【Kenroku-en Garden】
Take a bus to Kenroku-en Garden. It is a famous Japanese-style garden constructed over a long period of time by several lords of the Kaga clan. Its name, which literally means “a garden with six attributes”, derives from the fact that Matsudaira Sadanobu thought of it as an ideal garden with all six traditional attributes.

Kanazawa Station Bus Terminal - Kenrokuen-shita, approx.15 - 18 min. by Kenrokuen Shuttle or Hokutetsu Bus. Kenrokuen Shuttle running time 9:30 to 17:50. Runs only Sat. Sun. and National holidays.(comes every 12 min.). Bus fare:adult - 100 yen, child - 50 yen. Hokutetsu Bus : adult - 200 yen, child - 100 yen.

Kenroku-en Garden
【Tea Ceremony】
You will find tea houses dotted around this very spacious strolling-type garden. Please appreciate the six attributes of the garden in a relaxed manner, while savoring green tea. The Shiguretei teahouse, which is used for tea ceremonies, was once a villa; it was transformed into its present design in 2000. You can have Matcha (powdered green tea) here anytime.

【Kanazawa Nakamura Memorial Museum】
After enjoying the beauty of Kenroku-en Garden, and learning about the cultural background of Kanazawa, leave the garden through the Zuishinzaka Exit near Seisonkaku Villa and head for Honda-no-mori. You will see the brick building of the History Museum in front of you, and the white building of Ishikawa Prefectural Art Museum on your right. Walk along the Art Promenade, an alley to the left of the Art Museum, descend the stone steps, and walk in the forest, listening to the sound of a stream. At the bottom of the steps, Nakamura Memorial Museum will appear. This building used to be the house of the owner of a sake brewery, Nakamura Shuzo. It exhibits many precious antiques such as tea ceremony utensils, calligraphy, paintings, ceramic items including Ko-Kutani porcelain, Kaga makie lacquerware, and Kaga inlay works.

Kanazawa Nakamura Memorial Museum
【Kanazawa Lucquer Ware Kaga Makie】
When you leave Nakamura Memorial Museum, walk through the site of the 21st Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and walk along Hirosakadori Avenue toward Korinbo. You will find the Nosaku lacquerware shop, which has a wide selection of excellent tea ceremony utensils such as tea caddies and trays. Just looking at the items is fun. You can also experience making a lacquerware tray.

Kaga Makie Tea Caddy
【Ohi Gallary】
Let’s go back a little, and take a taxi through Kenrokuen-shita to Ohi Museum in Hashiba-cho. The building contains an art museum and gallery of Ohi ware, which is used mainly in the tea ceremony. As the building is also the house of the 10th-generation Ohi Chozaemon, a recipient of the Order of Culture, you may have a chance to see him. Ohi ware has a history of about 350 years; here pottery was produced for the Kaga clan, and contributed to the development of the tea ceremony in Kaga. The museum exhibits works made by the first Chozaemon and his successors, as well as works by prominent visitors to the studio.

10th Ohi Chozaemon
【Japanese Tea Ceremony Kettle Studio】
When you leave Ohi Museum, take a left turn to Owari-cho at the Hashiba-cho intersection, then take a right turn at the next corner after the Owari-cho traffic lights, and walk through Hikoso Green Area, enjoying the beautiful azalea blossoms. You will see the Miyazaki Kanchi Kettle Studio. The building looks like an ordinary house, as it is also the residence of the craftsman. It is the one with the pine tree in the garden. Please contact the studio before your visit.

Ohi Gallery - Miyazaki Kanchi Kettle Studio, approx. 8 min. walk.

The Miyazaki Kanchi family made tea ceremony kettles for the fifth lord Maeda Tsunanori. Now, the 14th-generation Kanchi is continuing the tradition. You can see the integrated manufacturing processes that are conducted by one craftsman.

Miyazaki Kanchi Kettle Studio
Nishida Family's Gyokusen-en Garden
This teahouse is located near Kenroku-en Garden, and is more than 100 years older than Kenroku-en Garden

Buke Yashiki Terashima Kurando-house
This building used to be the residence of Terashima Kurando, a retainer and artist of the Kaga clan. The clay wall, storehouse, guest room and waiting room have retained their atmosphere of old. Please savor some Matcha(powdered green tea), while admiring the seasonal beauty of the garden.

Nomura Samurai House
You may need to make a little detour to visit this house. It is located in the Naga-machi Buke Yshiki District. The owner used to be a leading retainer of the Kaga clan. You can have tea at Fubakuan, a tea room that looks onto a prestigious garden with streams and smallfalls.
